MEETING MINUTES 10/12/16

Synopsis:

A LEAGUE: no one present, but from the games the five teams are a good balance.

B+  LEAGUE: all teams are good at this level.  The division point was perfect. Honeybadgers are dominating, and understand that they may be tapped to move up to A. With the addition of a few strong players (DOUG FROM JP!!) they feel they will be fine to compete at this level.  At the end of the season, the top B+ team will play an extra game against the SuperGs (there was an odd # of games due to an odd # of teams, so this seemed a reasonable solution)

B- LEAGUE: teams were very happy with this level.  Agree that there is more of a range of abilities in this league than B+. Possibility of moving the bottom B- to BC and the top BC up was discussed and this may be a solution to the BC misplaced players issue as well.

BC LEAGUE:  Facebook postings and middle school drama don’t solve problems that exist.  Getting players to the right level will end their frustration and level out the teams to make is more FUN. Not a single team in this division has come away from a game not frustrated this season. This makes me sad.

C LEAGUE: Everyone is happy simply that they haven’t broken and bones and that everyone has finally learned to stop. Expanding this league to four has given players more ice time and made the games more fun.

League Issues

  1. Reffing Issues – Gary
    1. REFS NEED TO CALL MORE PENALTIES
    2. Need more refs
  2. Icing
    1. Continues to be confusing – refs call it at different times
    2. Rarely used in A league- used all the time in C.  Does it need to be league specific? LET THE INDIVIDUAL LEAGUES DECIDE
  3. Shields/Cages/Knock your teeth out
    1. BC and C require full cages
    2. B requires a shield
    3. A no requirements, but the smart people wear full cages
  4. Overtime
    1. 5 minute 4 on 4 sudden death – puts a maximum on lateness of game
    2. Not a shootout; it could last an hour in C league (sorry, but true)
    3. Everyone thought it was more exciting and took pressure off goalie
  5. Sub Issues
    1. Especially in BC and with certain teams- always get the ‘ringers’. Does not seem fair.  If you are constantly needing subs, GET MORE ROSTERED PLAYERS.
    2. MAXIMUM OF 2 SUBS FOR A TOTAL OF TEN PLAYERS.  Also, captains should inform the other captain of their subs as a courtesy. If you only have six players, you may only have 2 subs, for a total of eight.  Complain to your team members who didn’t show up.  No team with members missing should have an advantage over a team that shows up.
  6. Players at the wrong Level- consider ALL of the following
    1. Stats- Are they scoring most of the teams’ goals? Are they leading the league in points?
    2. Penalty minutes - Are they constantly a discipline problem on the ice? Are they making comments that are inconsistent with the level?
    3. Attitude - Are they matching the level of the player in front of them? Are they playing too competitively for their level?

DISCUSSION: Three players on the Outlaws seem to be in the wrong level.

Sean- probably would have more fun playing in the A or B+ league.  Seems like he is always holding back, and that isn’t any fun. Came from Iowa City Adult league, which is invite- only A. Not a bad guy, just not fair to him that he has to hold back.  And when he doesn’t, can easily skate end to end and score.

Brad- controlling the game, even if stats don’t show it.  Great defensemen, but when he is on the ice no one can even get near the goal.  Takes really long shifts.  Comments on the ice include far more competitive attitude than is appropriate for BC (this reported by a ref who asked him to tone it down)

Chris- overly competitive.  Skills are ok for BC, but just over the top chirping of the other team, seems frustrated at the level of play and would probably be happier at B-.

Captain brought the names of other players to me after the meeting.  When asked why they didn’t speak up at the meeting, informed me they didn’t want to be “that guy” who complained. But if the same people are being brought up, it is only then that we can identify them as needing to move up.

PLAYERS WHO MOVED LAST SEASON:  Jack Adams, Chase Hayes, Charlie Tirella, Kirby Dreher, Dawson and Derrick Wetlaufer (please note that FOUR of these players were from the Unicorns)

  1.  New Business
    1. Gary requested that Charlie be allowed to try BC again.  One captain said absolutely not, and the remaining captains were new enough in their role of captain they didn’t feel comfortable making that ruling without talking to their teams. No vote was taken.  At this time Charlie will not be allowed back in BC.
